Review: What Dreams May Come

This is a love story. A twisted love story of death, loss, sacrifice, and self-discovery. It's a bit of an adventure story as well but first and foremost a "high-brow" love story. It plays with a lot of questions that no one will ever really be able to answer and this can confuse the message of the movie for some people. The acting is good, story decent, and the special effects good. But the thing is, is that all those special effects eventually take over the movie and cloud its story. Every once in awhile the it stops to show you how neat the effects are and ends up losing the message in the process. The effects are not quite dated yet but with a sharp CGI eye you can spot a number of goofs. All in all, I liked it but wouldn't recommend it as a general view to my friends. If you're looking for a serious movie and can get past the special effects then I'd recommend this as a rental.

Review: Donnie Darko

Donnie sleepwalks and his imaginary friend Frank won't tell him why. Only that the world will end in 28 days and that he has a plan. Frank is a giant rabbit, an evil looking rabbit at that, that is from the future. He has Donnie do some very destructive things that tie into this future. The movie is Donnie trying to figure out why he is doing these things and why the world ends. All this leads up to the ending which may leave you wanting to watch it again. The whole movie is a bit surreal and it may actually take a second viewing to catch everything and make sense of it all, assuming that any sense or meaning can actually be taken from it. All in all, its a good film that leaves a lot of questions unanswered but nothing keeping it from becoming a cult classic. Put this on your netflix rental list but if you're the cultish type buy the DVD.

Review: The Island

I had higher hopes for this movie with Michael Bay at the helm (or maybe I should have known better). It has a script borrowed from 'The Clonus Horror', which is almost a better film. This is only a slight variation where clones are harvested for their body parts and new-borns. The main story is about two of these clones, Lincoln and Jordan, escaping literally for their lives. The acting is OK, direction is 'eh', and the "action" is unnecessary. The way that it was filmed it would have been much better as a serious drama than an action movie. Any action scenes were marked with shaky-cam and half-second blurred shots. This is unfortunate because it enhanced the flaws of this movie even more than hid them. The scene with our hero's hanging off the side of the building and miraculously making it safely to the ground is the worst offender of this. [Shut-off brain, eat more popcorn.] There was only one bad casting decision that I could see. Lincoln's friend Jones doesn't have the healthy body type of the clones portrayed in the movie. He's a fine actor but this wasn't the role for him. And as far as ending... I'm a fan of Sean Bean. His character was smart, obviously educated, and in control. That is until the very end where he lost it and left him... well... hung out. This barely rates as a rental.
