Review: The Island

I had higher hopes for this movie with Michael Bay at the helm (or maybe I should have known better). It has a script borrowed from 'The Clonus Horror', which is almost a better film. This is only a slight variation where clones are harvested for their body parts and new-borns. The main story is about two of these clones, Lincoln and Jordan, escaping literally for their lives. The acting is OK, direction is 'eh', and the "action" is unnecessary. The way that it was filmed it would have been much better as a serious drama than an action movie. Any action scenes were marked with shaky-cam and half-second blurred shots. This is unfortunate because it enhanced the flaws of this movie even more than hid them. The scene with our hero's hanging off the side of the building and miraculously making it safely to the ground is the worst offender of this. [Shut-off brain, eat more popcorn.] There was only one bad casting decision that I could see. Lincoln's friend Jones doesn't have the healthy body type of the clones portrayed in the movie. He's a fine actor but this wasn't the role for him. And as far as ending... I'm a fan of Sean Bean. His character was smart, obviously educated, and in control. That is until the very end where he lost it and left him... well... hung out. This barely rates as a rental.

Health Insurance PSA

Please think of all of the hard working health insurance executives who have nothing but our best interests in mind. They need our support.

Review: No Country for Old Men

A hunter stumbles across a drug deal gone bad. He takes the money and is now on the run from the dealers, the law, and a cool calculated killer. But this movie isn't about that. This movie isn't about who or what you think it is. I won't say much but our "hero" just disappears after about 2 thirds of the film. This is mearly a back-drop for the real message of the movie. The title hints at this. The acting was great, the pace worked, but the story needed to find out where it wanted to go. The real point of the film sat in the back waiting for everything else to play out and then never really showed up until the end. This was more like two stories running at the same time with the main message not getting the time it deserved. I found myself more interested in the "back-story" than what was intended. This rates as a rental.
